Opera Square, Ataba square, and Azbakiyya gardens, Cairo, Egypt

About the project: Our Design Approach was to give back a civic identity to the heart of Cairo - Opera, Ataba and Azbakiyya squares and gardens with the reuse of surrounding protected buildings and creation of a permeability and attraction to the area. Existing traffic is removed and redirected. The two squares are then united with articulated spaces giving different functions - soft landscape with fountain for Opera and hard landscape plaza for Ataba. A City Trail is the unity element and is envisaged to go from Ataba to Khazendar via Opera and Azbakiyyia providing opportunities to take in the various sites. Azbakiyya Gardens are reinstated with a new street to the east for a designated Central market. A Metro Central provides transport access with a large day lit concourse accessed via a covered open hall from the City Trail. A Theatre Plaza, key feature Buildings, Solo performance hall and projection screens are also included.
