Mulranny Apartments and Houses, Co. Mayo

About the project: These 20 apartments and 31 holiday houses were built in the vicinity of the Park Inn Mulranny Hotel, and were completed in December 2006. The apartments were built adjacent to the hotel in five two-storey blocks. The site is elevated high over Clew Bay and each block is anchored into the sloping terrain, which when viewed together create a dramatic composition. Individual apartments have curved balconies to the front, echoing the contours of the landscape. The apartments make use of a clean palette of white render, zinc rooflights and cedar cladding, combined with large sliding screens, which make the most of the stunning views. The holiday houses, at the back of the same headland, are woodland lodges inspired by alpine glass and timber retreat cabins. They were conceived as simple single-storey constructions on a wide plinth, with a loft bedroom creating a heightened 'tree house' of cedar and glass.
